What to Expect at Your First Consultation
Your first session is about understanding where you are now and creating a clear plan to get where you want to be. Here is exactly what happens — step by step.
How It Works
From your first free call to walking out with a personalised plan — here is the process.
Free 15-Minute Initial Call
Before committing to a full session, you can book a free 15-minute phone or video call with one of our team. This is a chance to briefly describe your health concerns, ask questions about our approach, and make sure we are a good fit for your goals. No pressure, no obligation.
Full Consultation (60 minutes)
Your first paid session is a comprehensive deep dive into your health. We review your blood work, current diet, medical history, medications, lifestyle, stress levels, sleep, and exercise. This is where we build a complete picture of your metabolic health — not just what you eat, but why your body responds the way it does.
Goal Setting & Plan Creation
Based on your assessment, we work together to set realistic, measurable goals. These might include a target HbA1c level, a weight loss milestone, or simply feeling more energetic and sleeping better. We then create your personalised nutrition plan — tailored to your food preferences, budget, cooking ability, and schedule.
After Your Session
You leave with a written nutrition plan, a clear set of next steps, and a follow-up appointment booked. We also provide email support between sessions so you never feel stuck. Most clients schedule follow-up sessions every 2–4 weeks initially, then monthly as they gain confidence.
Before Your Appointment: Checklist
Coming prepared helps us make the most of your time. Here is what to bring.
Blood Work
- Most recent blood test results (ideally within the last 3 months)
- Key markers we look for: HbA1c, fasting glucose, fasting insulin, full lipid panel (total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides), liver function, kidney function
- If you do not have recent blood work, we can advise which tests to request from your GP
Food Diary
- A 3–5 day record of everything you eat and drink (including portion sizes if possible)
- Include weekdays and at least one weekend day for accuracy
- Note the times you eat — meal timing patterns can be revealing
- A simple phone note or photos of meals works fine
Medication List
- All current medications with dosages (prescription and over-the-counter)
- Any supplements you take regularly
- Medication for diabetes, blood pressure, or cholesterol is especially relevant
Your Questions & Goals
- Write down your top 3 health goals (e.g., lose 10 kg, reduce medication, have more energy)
- Any specific questions about low carb, keto, or nutrition in general
- Foods you love and foods you hate — we build plans around your preferences

Who You Will Work With
Our team brings together medical, research, and coaching expertise — so you get well-rounded guidance, not just a meal plan.
Dr John Stewart leads The Nutrition Science Group and has decades of experience in evidence-based nutrition. Dr Glen Davies is a practising GP and Fellow of the Australasian Society of Lifestyle Medicine who helps clients safely adjust medications as their diet improves. Steven Hamley is a PhD researcher studying insulin resistance, bringing cutting-edge science into our coaching.
Together with Katherine Stewart and the wider team, we provide a multidisciplinary approach that goes well beyond what a single practitioner can offer.
What Results Can You Expect?
Everyone is different, but here are typical milestones our clients experience:
Week 1–2
Reduced cravings, more stable energy, initial weight loss (often 1–3 kg, mostly water and inflammation).
Month 1
Measurable improvements in fasting blood glucose. Clothes fitting better. Sleep and mood improvements commonly reported.
Month 3
HbA1c reduction becomes measurable. Significant weight loss. Many clients begin discussing medication reduction with their GP.
Month 6+
Sustained results with reduced coaching frequency. Many clients are now self-managing with quarterly check-ins.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a consultation cost?
The initial 15-minute call is free. Full consultation sessions are available from $75. We offer individual sessions and package deals — see our Membership page for current pricing. We are not a registered AHPRA provider, so consultations are not covered by Medicare or private health insurance at this time.
How long is the first session?
The full first consultation is typically 60 minutes. This gives us enough time to review your blood work, discuss your diet and lifestyle, set goals, and create an initial nutrition plan. Follow-up sessions are usually 30–45 minutes.
Do you offer telehealth consultations?
Yes. We work with clients across Australia and internationally via secure video call. Our telehealth sessions deliver the same quality of assessment and planning as in-person visits. Many of our long-term clients use a mix of in-person and telehealth depending on their schedule.
Do I need a GP referral?
No referral is needed to see us. However, we strongly encourage you to keep your GP in the loop — especially if you take medication for diabetes, blood pressure, or cholesterol. Our team, including Dr Glen Davies (a practising GP), works alongside your existing medical team, not in place of them.
What if I do not have any blood work?
That is perfectly fine. During the initial call or first session, we will advise you on which blood tests to request from your GP. Key markers like HbA1c, fasting insulin, and a lipid panel give us a metabolic baseline to measure your progress against. Many GPs will bulk-bill these tests if you mention metabolic health concerns.
